He graduated from the University of Michigan earning his Bachelors in Psychology. He received his Doctorate of Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry. In April 2000, he received a Ph.D. in Medicine from Tokyo Women's Medical College, Tokyo, Japan. He has practiced in a variety of locations: Chicago, Honolulu, San Jose, and most notably for 17 years in Tokyo, Japan. He returned to Honolulu in 2003.
